When I was a kid, I thought the best kind of day was the type that involved lying around on the sofa reading a book. I read anything I could find: books, magazines, newspapers, the back of cereal boxes, those messages on the side of the bus, menus, labels on food…. If it had words, I read it. And I’m still the same. I’ve found all the best places in the house for reading, from the sunbeam that comes through the attic skylight to the little spot next to the lilac bush that gets shade in the late afternoon.

I have the same passion for writing. My family will often come home to find the dishes half done and or the laundry still unwashed, and me sitting at my computer typing madly away. I’ve been known to scribble by the side of a soccer field while my son practices, or under the tarp on a kayaking trip with my husband, or between classes at the college where I teach.

I grew up moving every few years to a new country, but I’ve called Victoria, BC home for many years now. My husband, son and I live in a lovely house with a backyard big enough for our dog Tintin to run around in. As well as writing, I love to kayak, hike, climb, dance and hang out with my friends.

  1. Hi Kari Jones! Remember me from Kingston? I am in Victoria for a conference until 29 June. Let me know if you want to get together!! Perhaps on the Friday? Christine

  2. Hi Kari,

My name is Rachel Speller and I am the teacher librarian at Central Middle School. This year we are focusing on creative writing and working to promote a life long love of writing with our students. We have been writing on a variety of prompts and then sharing our work over the morning announcements.

I am inviting a number of authors to join with us in this event. What we are asking, is that you write a short creative piece on the image found at http://centralwrites.wordpress.com/. If you are available, we would love for you to come in and read the work on our morning announcements. Otherwise, if you could simply email me the piece and I will share it with our school.

Please let me know if this is something you would be interested in participating in.

    Thanks!

    Rachel Speller

    1. Hi Rachel,
This is such a coincidence, since I will be coming to your school on Dec 16 with Robin Stevenson. I will for sure participate and would love to come in and read my piece. When you say short, what are you thinking? A couple of hundred words?

  3. Kari, I have started reading and enjoying So Much for Democracy. Do you have any family photos of yourself in Ghana that you could send in case we do a write-up on your book for BC BookWorld?

    1. Hi Alan,
I’m so glad you are enjoying the book! I do have some photos of myself in Ghana- what kind of image do you have In mind? Maybe a picture of myself with some school friends?

  4. I was just wanting to let you know how much my daughter Cassidy ( age 11) loved your book Out of Season. It was a recommendation by her teacher. It is now here favorite book and she reads a lot. 🙂

    1. Oh my goodness, I’m so delighted to hear that. Do you and your daughter live near the ocean? I was at a writing retreat on the ocean last week and I saw two river otters and a seal right in front of the house I was staying in. Thank you so much for telling me that your daughter enjoyed my book. I’d love to hear from her if she’d like to write to me.

    1. Hi there, sorry it took me so long to reply. I’ve been having some summer adventures away from cell and wifi. I do have a few copies of the book. I can send you one if you give me a mailing address. They cost $10.00.
